5 Jul 2020 When MGM released "Shaft" in 1971, it proved that a Black film made by a Black Director for a Black audience could be a huge hit.

The story covers some of the same ground as "Cotton Comes to Harlem," but in a different way. Shaft is brought in by a Harlem rackets boss whose traditional slice of power is being threatened by the Mafia. They don't want a partnership anymore, so they kidnap the boss's daughter. Shaft's job is to get her back.

Shaft was the first movie of a trilogy from the early seventies starring Richard Roundtree as the titular tough-minded New York private detective, John Shaft.
